Gratuitous plug following: Best Friends Animal Society of Kenab, UT is *way* deserving of support, *way* more than the c̶r̶o̶o̶k̶e̶d̶ ̶&̶ ̶p̶o̶l̶i̶t̶c̶a̶l̶ 'que$tionable' but more-adverti$ed animal welfare org$ like A$PCA (with Sarah McLachlan's record-shattering TV appeal known in charity circles as "THE Ad") or worse, Humane $ociety of the United $tates (H$U$) or worst of all, PETA. BFAS is a huge, true 'no-kill' shelter, and makes heroic efforts to rescue condemned animals from many shelters which aren't, especially when it's due to overflow from a large puppy mill or Michael Vick situation. They are *very* deserving of support, and that can be done painlessly in some cases like Amazon Smile or Kroger-chain Grocery Cards, and via eBay Giving Works (designate 10% or more of your listing to BFAS or tack on a buck or two to any eBay purchase). When it come time for me to get another dog it will definitely be from a shelter. There are too many deserving dogs out there. Great post @BiB

All but my first dog at age 6 have been rescues in one way or another. I've had eight of them now, all just *wonderful* animals. But I know some 'purebred snobs' who insist on having an AKC dog from a breeder. "You just never know what you're gonna get from a shelter!" True. From a breeder, you're assured of getting high-dollar, overbred, inbred dogs full of congenital breed-specific health issues.

Genetic variation is vital to the health and survival of a species. :-)

And even if you *gotta* have a _____ breed, there is no doubt an abandoned purebred of that type at a shelter somewhere, and cheap doggy DNA tests to find out for sure.
