Not rating serves the same function without adding any confusion. I mean, there are over a 100K galleries here, more get added every day. It's very unlikely you'll ever rate them all.

Well, there’s really one key point that answers everything: I’ve also thought about using “no rating” as an option, but having a dedicated field would clearly show how many users didn’t feel confident enough to rate—those who wanted to but couldn’t. This way, “no rating” would be reserved for users who simply chose not to rate or had little to no interaction with the gallery. I’m confident this new field would help measure how much interest a gallery sparked in users, whereas the simple “no rating” doesn’t convey that.

I disagree but I appreciate the thought you've put into it. In a way, users who don't rate a gallery (or if they were using the hypothetical "?" rating) would still contribute to the page views that drive Popularity, which, in turn, I have to think, is a factor in the overall Site ratings. I'll admit that a user with no rating based on no interaction (no click or view) would not register. There's a guy here, his name escapes me atm, but he's got a theory of his own on how the site algorithm works. I've resigned myself to going along with the algorithm we've got, it seems reasonable to me and there's not much we can do to change it. It's been said that ignorance is bliss and I'm living proof.

😄 Oh, if only all ignorance were like this, the world would be a much better place. But I get it, I know the site works just fine the way it is. I’ve been around here since 2009 and have seen how much effort Eli has put into improving it and making everything more functional.
