@Spankyn & tweety I think they are trying to go for a girl-next-door image, which is very popular among idol fans. For the same reason, they try to be subtle with makeup on the idols' faces, and go with simple hairstyles. Sometimes they even add props like band-aids (see little toe on right foot); she is not actually injured, it is there to make her more girl-next-door-like.

I admit I've never been to Japan but do know that the housing is very close together and I think "cheap housing" would more resemble cots side by side in one room tenaments than one having a balcony seems that would be a luxury. just thinking.

Also, they often do the photoshoots at relatively cheap housing estates (see background) or other low-end neighborhoods; it's the same rationale.

@Spankyn I don't think it's the photographers choice of "grannie panties" rather just the conservative mores of the Japanese society. Just a guess.

What is up with these Japanese photographers and their insistence on granny panties? Bikinis, too. I get that that is a style in Japan....what I can't figure out is...why???
